The Way Of The King.
Week #3: Jesus On Being Salt And Light.
Opening Reflection.
Where have you seen God’s Kingdom at work in your life this week?
Or how have you experienced The Way of The King in your life this week?
Share any brief examples and encouragements.
‘You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.’
‘You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.’
Matthew 5:13
Matthew 5:14-16
Salt.
1. What does it mean to be the salt of the earth? What does salt do? What did it mean to Jesus' first listeners?
2. What would it mean to be the salt of the earth in your neighbourhood?
3. How would followers of Jesus lose their “saltiness”? What happens to them if they do?
Light.
1. What does it mean to be the light of the world?
2. Isn't “light of the world” a description of Jesus? Why did Jesus apply it to his followers?
3. What does light do? How are followers of Jesus meant to do those things?
4. Why is it ever tempting to “hide your light”, to conceal that you are a follower of Jesus?
5. How and why are followers of Jesus supposed to be distinct and different?
6. Why are we supposed to do good deeds?
7. Do all good deeds give glory to the Father in heaven?
8. How did Jesus live out this teaching?
Closing Reflection.
What elements of the Kingdom of God from this passage would you like to see more of in your life over this next week?
Is there anything you will take away from this study and discussion? What has stood out that you can take into your week ahead?
Pray together (in pairs or small groups) for each other, in response to your answers.
