The Way Of The King.
Week #1: Jesus And The Kingdom Of God.
Opening Reflection.
Where have you seen God at work in your life this week?
Share any brief examples and encouragements.
Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and illness among the people. News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralysed; and he healed them. Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him. Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.
Matthew 4:23-5:2
1. Look at the first sentence of this passage.
Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and illness among the people.
- What four verbs are used?
- What do these four verbs tell us about Jesus’ strategy for expressing God’s Kingdom?
- Is there anything else about this sentence that stands out to you?
2. Look at the second sentence of this passage.
News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralysed; and he healed them.
- What is the result of Jesus’ actions in Galilee?
- What direction does the news go? What direction do the people go? What does Jesus do in response?
- Is there anything else about this sentence that stands out to you?
3. Look at the third sentence of this passage.
Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.
- If Jesus came to announce and establish God’s ‘Kingdom’(literally the dominion of the king), what can you see as evidence that this is succeeding? (Think about both geography and heart/actions.)
- Is there anything else about this sentence that stands out to you?
4. Look at the fourth and fifth sentence in this passage.
Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.
- Before Jesus begins speaking what we call ‘The Sermon on the Mount’, what might the crowds have anticipated him saying? Try to put yourself in the shoes of the people at the time. What were some of the expectations for a messiah before Jesus’ arrival?
- Now that crowds are following and engaging with Jesus, why do you think it’s important for him to unpack his manifesto of the kingdom?
